THINGS TO DO

Situated between the towns of Machecoul and Fresnay-en-Retz, the property is only 20 minutes away from the large tourist towns of Challans and Pornic, 45 minutes from La Baule, home to the longest sandy beach in Europe, and 35 minutes from the historic town of Nantes.

FOOD MARKETS

If you want an authentic taste of what the region has to offer, you have to make a trip to one of the local food markets.

 

There are food markets every day of the week from
9 am to 12:30, except Mondays, with various locations open on different days.

If you venture to La Baule, a sheltered food and outdoor clothes market is operating every day of the week, except Mondays .

A daily schedule of the markets is provided in the welcome book you receive upon arrival.

LEISURE

The region is well-known for cycling with the Tour de France coming by the area every year. Why not explore one of the many cycle paths around the Marais.

 

You can take a bike ride into Pornic for lunch before heading back to the house. There are plenty of Vendée-vélo cycle routes which are well marked allowing you to explore the beautiful scenery the area offers.

If the six bikes at your disposal are not enough you can rent additional ones and have them delivered straight to the chateau with OuiBike. If you want your very own bike that you can also bring home, Machecoul is home to the Bike Factory. 

Visit Tourism-Loire Atlantique for the best cyclist routes in the area or venture a bit further to the Puy du Fou which has been voted as France’s best attraction park. 

Visit the charming island of Noirmoutier for walking and cycling trails, land yachting and board sports, or bird-watching in the Sébastopol Polder Nature Reserve. Whatever your interests, you’ll have the chance to breathe in the fresh air and admire the nature all around you.

Let the magic of stories and legends whisk you away in Legendia Park. Over 400 animals await you in this 33-hectare managed park and take centre stage in our mythical shows.

​You'll be drawn in by 40 forces of attraction at Futuroscope and won't want to leave. With journeys, thrills and fun games, there'll be something for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

Go for a safari adventure at Planète Sauvage with vast grounds to explore and lots of outdoor and indoor habitats housing your favourite animals.

 

Ocearium Croisic is the perfect destination for an outing with family or friends. Immerse yourself in a space dedicated to sea life.

If you're interested in bird watching; the Marais Salant is home to hundreds of bird species. Visit Grand Lieu Nature in Saint Philbert de Grand Lieu.

Head to the historical town of Guérande to visit its lovely medieval walled city and drive or cycle out to visit the largest Celtic salt marshes in the world, le Marais Guérandais.

For art amateurs, we recommend heading into the village of Batz-sur-mer, a stone’s throw away and visiting the Galerie of Gérard Boulfray, a local famous artist with fabulous paintings.

Explore the local restaurants or buy fresh food from the local markets.

BEACHES

Around Pornic Bay is a string of creeks, beaches and little seaside resorts along 52km of coastline. Enjoy the sun, as well as practice many water activities.

The closest beach for a quick dip is Les Moutiers-en-Retz but at high tide only. It's one with the warmest water.

The closest beach for all-day swimming is La Plage de la Noeveillard in the Pornic.

 

The longest nearby sandy beach is La Baule.

On the island of Noirmoutier there is a lovely beach surrounded by pine trees, named “Le bois de la chaise”.
